Railsponsible 2018-2019 in Numbers
Letter from the Chair
Railsponsible is a very rich experience to live. Having been part of this journey over the past years, I’m more convinced than ever of one thing: we are all part of the answer. It is only collectively, by promoting exchanges and by working together, that we will really change our purchasing practices to be more sustainable. Whether we are large, medium, or small businesses, customers or suppliers, Railsponsible is a real opportunity for us to compare our experiences and learn from those of others. Railsponsible must be organized and structured to provide concrete answers to the market, so that it evolves in a sustainable way. We must never forget that this goal is our priority, our “raison d’être”.
Looking back at the past year, one of our main achievements has been the redesign of Railsponsible’s governance rules. The new governance will enable us to smoothly integrate new members and will ensure that everyone can contribute to the discussions and to our operational work. Beyond the integration of new companies, we also took the opportunity to open the initiative to “associate” members in order to benefit from the experiences and expertise of other actors in our ecosystem.
Another accomplishment that we are very proud of is the publication of our position paper on Climate. Climate change is one of the major issues that we all face, and companies in the sector—whether customers or suppliers—have a key role to play. We proudly presented the position paper at Innotrans last September in Berlin during a Railsponsible workshop focused on this topic; at the same workshop, we also rewarded two suppliers who had distinguished themselves through their climate performance with the Railsponsible Climate Change Supplier Award.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue in my role as Chair of Railsponsible and to contribute to some of the key milestones that are planned for this year.
Firstly, we have embarked on a process to review our strategy, with the aim of building a collaboration platform for impactful action in our supply chains. We want to be ambitious, setting ourselves targets and goals that will help our supply chains strive for and contribute to sustainable outcomes.
Secondly, we want to learn from each other more, sharing practices and learnings from our own experiences as individual companies. We aim to build a community of procurement practitioners that see responsible procurement as a key tool for business success. Using a range of channels, we will aim to further integrate sharing of best practices among members. We will also hold a dedicated Railsponsible Forum in October, gathering and uniting this community of practitioners.
Finally, we are building a network of industry stakeholders that we want to engage and invite to join us on our journey. In this context, we are happy to have initiated a close engagement and collaboration with the UIC. We hope that this will lead to a strong convergence, increasing the effectiveness of the work that we both conduct on responsible purchasing.
